Do you even need a separate email tool?

Your course platform already sends email. Everyone who answers this question sells the answer, so here is what these four actually do, quoted from their own documentation, including the cases where the answer is that you should not buy anything yet.

What each one's built-in email actually does

  • Teachable

    No automated sequence

    Their own docs tell you to get one

    "Teachable already allows you to send one-time emails to your students, but you may want to integrate an ESP to promote your courses more effectively." Source

    One-off emails to students, and that is the ceiling. There is no automated sequence, so a new student hears from you only when you sit down and write.

    You outgrow it Immediately, if you want anything beyond a manual send.

  • Podia

    Automates a sequence

    Genuinely enough to start

    "Trigger emails automatically based on subscriber actions, like joining a list or buying a product." Source

    Real triggered automation, and it is not locked behind a higher tier. What is capped is the number of subscribers, at 100, 500 or 1,000 depending on plan.

    You outgrow it When you outgrow the subscriber cap on your plan.

    Automates a sequence

    Enough, until the logic gets complicated

    Trigger-based automation is included, which covers a welcome sequence comfortably. The deeper conditional logic sits on higher plans.

    You outgrow it When you need branching logic and you are still on Basic.

    Enough, but not on the cheapest plan

    Sequences arrive on the Start plan and above. The Basic plan gets an automated abandoned-cart email only, which is not a welcome sequence.

    You outgrow it When you want a welcome sequence while on Basic.

The three things a dedicated tool adds

  1. Emailing people who have not bought. Course platforms are built around students. Collecting and mailing an audience that has not enrolled yet needs forms and landing pages aimed at strangers, which is the part they tend not to do.
  2. Segmenting past what the course tracks. Your course platform knows about enrolments and progress. It does not know who opened the last four emails and clicked nothing.
  3. Being able to leave. A list living inside your course platform means changing course platforms moves both at once. Held separately, you can change one without touching the other.

So do I need a separate email tool or not?
Probably not on day one, unless you are on Teachable. 3 of the 4 course platforms we checked can already send an automated welcome sequence, which is the thing most people go shopping for. The honest trigger is different for each one, and it is listed above.
What does a dedicated email platform actually add?
Three things your course platform generally will not do. Emailing people who have not bought anything, which needs forms and landing pages for non-students. Segmenting beyond what the course platform tracks. And taking your list with you, because a list held inside your course platform is much harder to move than one held in a tool built for lists.
Is it a problem to keep my list inside my course platform?
It is a risk rather than a problem. Your list and your course become one account, so leaving means moving both at once, and your email history and automations usually do not come with you. If you expect to change course platforms, keeping the list separate is cheaper than untangling it later.
What if I am on Teachable?
