Same thing, different word: email platform terms

Every email platform does the same six jobs and names them differently. A one-off email to your list is called a campaign, a post, an email campaign, a newsletter, a broadcast or an email, depending on the platform. When you move, the word you know is often attached to a different thing.

Each term below is read off that platform's own help pages, checked 12 September 2026, and links to the page that uses it. Where we could not find a term on their pages, the table says so instead of guessing.

The two that catch people out

A one-off email to your list. Across the 12 platforms we read, it goes by 6 names: campaign, post, email campaign, newsletter, broadcast, email.

Emails that send themselves on a schedule. These go by 6 names: automation workflow, automation, campaign, autoresponder, workflow, automation path.

"campaign" appears in both lists: one platform uses it for a single email, another for a series that sends itself. Check which one your new tool means before you rebuild anything.

Before you import, match each automation in your old tool to the word your new tool uses, and rebuild it there. An import moves people, not the automations they were in. What happens to people when you import them is its own page.
